About NEET UG 2024 Row: Supreme Court Issues Notices on NTA’s

In response to a series of appeals from the National Testing Agency (NTA) requesting the transfer of cases against it that are pending in lower courts over the NEET-UG controversy to the highest court to prevent multiple lawsuits, the Supreme Court on Monday sent letters to private parties. Prior to this, on June 14, a vacation bench had sent notices to the parties regarding similar NTA requests.

According to the NTA, there are multiple appeals in various high courts seeking the cancellation of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG), 2024, due to claims of question paper leaks and other malpractices.

Appearing on behalf of the NTA, Advocate Vardhaman Kaushik persuaded Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala's bench on Monday that the new round of pleadings

"Issue notice and tag," the bench declared, adding that on July 18, these arguments will also be considered alongside the pending petitions over the NEET-UG row.

Additionally, the NTA pleaded with the bench to put a halt to the ongoing cases in several high courts. According to the CJI, the high courts do not hold hearings once the Supreme Court issues notice on transfer petitions.

The bench instructed the NTA attorney to notify the relevant high courts of this. Up to five petitions asking for the transfer of cases from different high courts to the top court were being heard by the court.

The hearing on several additional petitions seeking cancellation, retest, and investigation into suspected malpractices in the conduct of NEET-UG, 2024 was earlier postponed by the court on July 11 until July 18. This was due to certain parties not receiving a reply from the NTA and the Center. The bench had further stated that it had obtained a status report on the investigation into purported irregularities in the exam's administration from the CBI.
