The Sambalpur University established on 10th December, 1966. The university came with an objective to fulfill long cherished dream of the students of Western Odisha. The University was started functioning from January, 1^st, 1967.

The territorial jurisdiction of this University covers 6 districts of the Odisha state namely Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Boudh, Bargarh and Athamallik.

The University provides PG education in 27 subjects through Twenty Post-Graduate Departments. Some popular courses are M.Phil Degree, M.A. / M.Sc./ LL.M. / M.Lib/ Business Administration & M.C.A. and Executive M.B.A.

The Directorate of Distance Education established by Private Education Cell.

The Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education has started in the year 1998 with only on-campus courses in collaboration with P.G. Departments of Sambalpur University.
